Hair Trends for Spring/Summer 2010

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 1, 2010 by stylesnappers

If you’re wondering how to have hair like Eva or wear your hair for those difficult spring/summer events (weddings/races/christenings – see below for my own christening woes) then check out guest blogger hairdresser Cara’s top tips:

Colours of the season

Spring is here, so it’s time to wipe the winter blues out of your hair. Liven up your look this season with a semi-permanent gloss colour – speak with a professional stylist to help you choose what colour gloss will enhance your locks.

I am loving Eva’s hair in this picture, it’s bang on trend with natural tones breaking up her rich brunette hair. Coppers, light browns and light chestnuts work great with brunette hair. Use gold, caramel and honey tones for blondes or copper or red mahogany to deepen or enhance red hair.

Spring Trends

For fabulous hair straight from the catwalk, I’m advising my clients to take inspiration from London Fashion Week. This season, high chignons and bows were the hottest catwalk trend for spring. They may look complicated, but anyone can do them. Just check out my ‘how to’ guide below:

How to create the perfect chignon

1) Pull your hair into a high ponytail right on top of your head.

2) Working from the ends upwards, wrap your ponytail around a chignon pad from John Lewis or Boots.

3) Secure the padding with clips, or some chignon pads have studs at the end, clip together and pull your hair around the pad to make a chignon fit for the red carpet. Finish with a fabulous bow from Monsoon or Top Shop.

Products of the Month

Frederic Fekkai -  Colour Care Shampoo

I love his product at the moment – I was really excited to see John Lewis are now stocking them as well as Space NK.

That’s all for now, StyleSnappers, more hair trends next time.

Love, Cara x

What to Wear for the Christening Catwalk

Posted in Uncategorized on April 29, 2010 by stylesnappers

There are many events that are supposed to be about one thing, but they’re really about another. Take weddings, for instance. They’re supposed to be about the joining in matrimony of two people in love. For the couple concerned, they are. For everyone else, it’s about the party afterwards. All too often, it’s the same with funerals. And when it comes to christenings, in Liverpool at least, it’s all about the fashion.

The ‘what to wear on the christening catwalk’ is made doubly difficult by the fact that it’s Bank Holiday the day after and the christening is to be followed by a drinking session in town – where jeans and a nice top would be most appropriate.

Any suggestions on the sort of attire that would cover a dressy christening, followed by an uncomfortable train ride into town, followed by an afternoon doing karaoke with the old men in the city’s Baby Croc would be most appreciated, as at the moment I don’t have a clue!!!

We Want This Dress!!!

She’s not known for setting style trends, but credit where credit’s due, and Kerry Katona looks absolutely fabulous in this creation. But we have three questions here:

1) Who’s the designer?

2) Can we afford it?

3) Can we look this good in it?

We’re guessing the answer to question 2 is no, while 3 . . . .? Maybe. In the meantime, why not try this no doubt budget version of whoever it is that Kerry’s wearing. At £35 from the fabulous Oli, you can’t go wrong. Buy dress here.

Disappointing Outnet Sale

Posted in Thoughts with tags on April 16, 2010 by stylesnappers

Anyone else thoroughly disappointed with The Outnet sale? I turned on my computer this morning, full of excitement at the £1 designer gem I was about to buy, only to waste two hours of my life trying to actually access the sale. Just when I thought I’d found it, a nice little message popped up saying the sale was now over! Would be glad to know if anyone actually bought anything!!

Wear It Like . . . Jennifer Aniston (in New York)

Posted in Wear it like . . . with tags , , , , , , , on March 17, 2010 by stylesnappers

Hollywood’s most stylish celeb doesn’t stop, does she! Last night she was wowing crowds with the New York premiere of The Bounty Hunter. In a marked departure from last week’s mini outfit, this time she was showing off her toned physique in a stunning Donna Karan Grecian-style number.

See Jen’s New York outfit here

As usual, we can’t quite stretch to Donna Karan – so we’ve found something similar at much less. This beautiful Rachel Pally design is just $233 (you do the math!). For that price we reckon you can probably afford a Gerard Butler – style escort for the evening too! Buy here

Wear It Like . . . Jennifer Aniston (in London)

The past few months have seen Jen adopting a more sleek and sexy style – and never was that new look more evident than at the London premiere of The Bounty Hunter.

Looking more fabulous at 41 than we’ve ever seen her, Jen showed off her amazing figure in a silver Valentino mini dress, a black Alexander McQueen tuxedo jacket, and Jimmy Choos.

And while most of us don’t currently have the cash to splash on Jennifer’s exact outfit (lottery ticket anyone?), we can certainly stretch to these look-a-like alternatives.

See Jen’s premiere outfit here

In a similar style to Jennifer’s, this chainmail dress is on sale at ASOS – currently reduced from £75 to just £31! Buy here Why not also team it with this black blazer, just like Jen, for £33.76. Buy here

Et voila – Jennifer’s outfit for under £65!

We’re In The Army Now

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on March 9, 2010 by stylesnappers

Quick question – can combat gear ever look feminine? Or even, dare we say it, sexy?

Well if the SS 2010 shows were anything to go by, the answer is a resounding ‘yes’.

Stella McCartney, MaxMara, Chloe, Balmain and Celine are just some of the many designers who embraced military wear this season with gusto. Fortunately, they also added their own special touches to make the look so wearable you can even wear it in the office without your colleagues thinking you’re about to draw your weapon and shoot your boss.

 Always a step ahead of trends, our favourite celebs have been wearing the Balmain jackets in particular for months:

But don’t worry if you don’t have a designer-level income – as usual our high street friends have already created their own combat lines, making them even more wearable – and affordable – for us mere mortals.

Warehouse has positively embraced the combat theme with its collection of military-inspired clothing. Originally launched in 1976 and known as Warehouse Utility Clothing, the Utility label has been brought back for spring. Incorporating ruffles, studs and even sequins, its collection gives even the most basic of outfits that extra edge.

Mango is also having a military moment, and its pieces for both men and women are bang on-trend. So convince your boyfriend he’d look great in an olive-green shirt – and then borrow it!

 New Look have also come up trumps in producing a great, affordable line of very wearable clothing, as do many of the other high street shops. And don’t forget to check out the second hand shops two – StyleSnappers spotted a great olive combat jacket in one charity shop for just £8. Unfortunately for us it was a size 8!

How to wear military:

  • Layer jackets over a blouse or dress;
  • Wear with skinny jeans or slim trousers to show off your feminine side;
  • Add some great jewellery, such as New Look’s charm bracelet or Mango’s Caracola necklace;
  • Remember, when it comes to utility wear, less is more. Wear one or two pieces rather than going for the full-on army look.
